The History of GFS Saddles

Did you know that we’ve been in business since March 1981? We’ve got over 40 years of expertise in designing and handcrafting saddles for a range of different horses, riders and disciplines. Whether you fondly remember riding in one of our original Fieldhouse saddles or have only just discovered us with the exciting launch of our new GFS Premier range this year, we invite you to join us as we take a step back in time to explore the rich heritage of the brand.
At the centre of it all is Founding Director Geoff Fieldhouse, who has played a key role in the development and direction of GFS Saddles since day one. Truly, nobody knows GFS Saddles like he does, and his perspective offers a valuable look at how the brand has evolved over time. We recently caught up with him to discuss the company’s history, its ongoing journey and some notable moments along the way.
Can you share the story behind the founding of GFS Saddles? What inspired the creation of the brand?
Geoff: After completing my A levels, I started an apprenticeship with my Uncle, who was a Walsall saddle maker, so the craft ran in the family. There was no plan initially for the GFS Saddles brand to exist, I was just learning the craft and gaining experience and knowledge.
What was the original vision or mission behind GFS Saddles?
Geoff: As time went on, it became clear to me that making saddles of my own brand would give them a unique identity.
Do you remember the very first GFS saddle ever made? How does it compare to today's designs?
Geoff: Not really no! It was a very long time ago…. Although I can safely say that the difference between my first saddle and the saddles we produce today is night and day.
Have there been any particular people (whether in the equestrian world or beyond) that have helped to shape the direction of GFS Saddles?
Geoff: There have been many people along the journey who have really helped shape GFS Saddles into what it is today. From members of my team over the years to the many riders I have worked with, but most of all, credit must go to Mrs Fieldhouse.
How has GFS Saddles evolved in terms of technology and craftsmanship over the years?
Geoff: Here at GFS Saddles, we pride ourselves on our ability to move with the times and embrace change. Being open-minded definitely helps us to design and produce the best products we can.
Looking back at the history of GFS Saddles, are there any moments or milestones that particularly stand out?
Geoff: There have been many standout moments over the years, but I would say a big one for me was our first BETA trade show and also, believe it or not, the COVID-19 pandemic. For me, that period of time just proved how strong and resilient we are as a team.
What does the future look like for GFS Saddles? How do you envision the brand continuing to evolve?
Geoff: The future of GFS Saddles looks very promising. We have a great team and a great product range. With new customers and an ever-growing overseas market, we continue to have the opportunity to keep evolving the brand.
There you have it! A behind-the-scenes insight into how GFS Saddles first came to be and the journey we’ve been on over the past 40 years.
