GFS Saddle Features Explained
Gullet Plates
What does an adjustable gullet bar actually do?
The gullet plate is fitted into the front arch of the saddle’s tree, beneath the pommel. It helps maintain the shape and strength of that arch and determines the fitting width and angle at the front of the saddle.
Changing the plate allows your saddle fitter to make that front fitting narrower or wider, within the model’s adjustment range, to better suit your horse’s shape around the withers.
Why does it matter and what benefit is that to me?
Your horse’s shape can change with muscle development, condition, workload or time off. An interchangeable gullet plate gives your fitter options to adapt the front fitting as those changes happen.
Where the saddle’s overall shape remains suitable, this may allow your existing saddle to be adjusted rather than replaced — giving you greater confidence in your purchase, reducing the risk of needing another saddle and offering long-term value.
Does changing the plate automatically make the saddle fit?
It’s one part of the picture. The saddle’s overall tree shape, length, balance, panel contact and clearance must also suit your horse, including during ridden work.
A suitable saddle from the start, flexibility for the future and regular fitting checks throughout your journey — helping your fitter identify changes early, support your horse’s comfort and help you get lasting value from your saddle.
